Madras Plaid

A brief history of a summer classic

It’s easy to spot at any stylish summer gathering in the lakeside communities of the upper Midwest, the cheerful, brightly hued plaid and patchwork of classic Madras fabric.   Named after the Indian city of Madras (renamed Chennai in 1996 ) in eastern India, Madras fabric is made of lightweight, hand-woven cotton, ideal for the steamy climate of India and summer in the Great Lakes region. European traders working in the area during the 17th century first brought the fabric to their homelands. It gained popularity in England and throughout the British Empire.

Madras fabric first appeared in the US in the early 1700’s.  Its arrival on our shores is often linked to of a donation from Elihu Yale, the Governor of Madras, to the Collegiate School of Connecticut (now known as, you guessed it, Yale University).   The style quickly became popular at Ivy League colleges and, as with so many classic fashions, has endured through the decades.

Characteristics of Madras Fabric

Authentic Madras fabric is easily distinguished by its unique characteristics. It’s always hand woven cottons with the same pattern on both sides of the cloth. Bold patterns, bright colors and plaids are typical.  Authentic Madras cloth has tiny flaws, little raised nubs in the fabric, characteristic of hand woven technique. To be truly authentic, as determined by the Federal Trade Commission, it must bear all these characteristics and be imported from the Chennai region of India.

Characteristics of Authentic Madras Fabric

  • Hand-woven from cotton yarn
  • Same pattern on both sides
  • Small, raised imperfections in the fabric
  • Made in Chennai, India

How to wear Madras Plaid

Whether your Madras items are genuine, or simply inspired by the real article, you’ll want to add this classic to your summer wardrobe.  Apply some restraint, though.  Madras plaid is often bright and eye-catching, but there is no need to become a spectacle.  It’s easy to overdo it.  Stick with one item at a time.  Shorts or knee-length skirts are perfect choices.  For the bold, a Madras plaid jacket makes a real statement. Or keep your enthusiasm in check and opt for a simple accessory such as a belt, scarf, loafers or handbag.  Have fun with it and know that you are helping to keep a classic alive.

I think we can agree that this look goes a bit too far.

But worn individually, these pieces are preppy perfection.

This is just right.
