Historic Evanston Home

Everyone in Evanston knows this house.  Everyone.  For more than 100 years, it has guarded over a prominent corner of a well-traveled north-south avenue in this leafy enclave along Chicago’s north shore.  For decades, this stately colonial with its wide wrap-around porch seemed to be constantly undergoing renovation.  It was never clear to the neighborhood observer the exact state of the project.  New windows were installed, but the manufacturer’s stickers remained for months. New paint was applied, but ivy grew back before the work was finished.  For 40 years a previous owner gradually worked on renovations.  Making progress, but never reaching completion. Now, at long last, a peek behind the imposing walnut doors.

In 2015, the home was sold to the current owners who found the interior peeled back to the studs. They got to work creating the stunningly gorgeous yet warm and welcoming interiors that this historic home deserves.

This home greets visitors with a wide porch and a light-filled front entrance. The incredible attention to detail in the renovation is evident from the first step into the foyer. Gray can be a tricky paint color to get right, but these owners give a master class in selecting the perfect shade to complement the bright, white woodwork adorning the staircase. The newly refinished oak floors are a perfect warm shade of chestnut. And my plaid loving heart leaps for joy at the sight of the custom made cushion on the welcoming bench.

The living room, featuring the original marble mantel,  opens to a grand dining room large enough to accommodate a grand piano in addition to the vintage table and case pieces.

The kitchen. Oh my goodness. Any chef would be quickly spoiled in this space with professional-grade appliances and an enormous island that will accommodate the most ambitious meal preparation. The kitchen opens to a warm and inviting family space.

The home includes four bedrooms and plenty of newly remodeled bathrooms. One even features an impressive greenhouse skylight allowing the bath space to function as a greenhouse as well.

This home with its generous yard is adjacent to a public park and play space offering plenty of opportunities for outdoor enjoyment.  And it’s located just blocks from the popular Main Dempster Mile shopping and entertainment district.
